Jamie’s Ministry of Food

jamies_ministry_of_food1Jamie Oliver promises to teach anyone how to cook tasty and nutritious meals that are simple and quick to prepare. All you have to do is check out the recipes and tips in his easy to read book, “Ministry of Food”.

We at BShare sent copies of the book to several of our members to see if they could, in fact, learn to cook in 24 hours. Our testers ranged from students to retirees, but had something in common – all claimed that they couldn’t cook. Either because they had never learned how to, or because they were simply too busy.

Sophie, a single mother of two and part time sales assistant claimed that between looking after the kids and working, she just didn’t have the time to cook. Instead, she resorted to pre-prepared meals or take away. Just one day after receiving her copy of Jamie’s Ministry of Food, she told us that she had prepared a family meal from scratch for the first time. She whipped up Jamie’s ‘Classic Tomato Spaghetti’ in minutes. “This meal took me not much longer than opening a jar a pasta sauce. I couldn’t believe that it was so quick and easy. And best of all, I knew what was in it, so I didn’t have to feel guilty about feeding my kids junk.”

Mike, a 22 year old mechanic, had never learned to cook. His mum had always prepared his meals and since moving out on his own, he lived on take away or dinners out. A few days after receiving his book, he told us that he had actually tried a couple of the recipes, but his favorite was ‘Macaroni Cauliflower Cheese Bake’. “It tastes just like the mac and cheese my mum used to make when we were kids. Next time my parents visit I’m definitely going to serve it to them. Mum won’t believe I made it myself.”

Vic is a retired engineer who never had a need to cook. His mother cooked for him until he got married and since then his wife has been cooking for him. “I just made my wife the ‘Super-Quick Salmon Stir-Fry’. She has cooked my meals every day for the last 43 years, so I was pretty chuffed to finally be able to make something for her. The smile on her face when I served her the meal was reward enough for me.”

Amanda is a uni student who has just moved into an apartment with two friends. “We take it in turns to cook, but until now, my night has always been something like grilled cheese sandwiches. Last night I made ‘Chicken Fajitas’ and the girls were speechless. They were absolutely amazed that I had served up something so delicious. I guess there’ll be no more groans when it’s next my night to cook!”

There really is a fantastic range of recipes in the book including Twenty-minute meals, Quick pasta, Easy curries and Homely mince. Whether you’re a novice in the kitchen, or just want a book full of simple, delicious recipes, Jamie’s Ministry of Food is a great choice.
