Are You Being Tricked At The Supermarket?

supermarket

There was a time log ago when buying the home brand at the supermarket didn’t offer you many choices. If you wanted variety, your only choice was to fork out the money to buy the premium brands.

Thanks to the big supermarkets, that has all changed.

Being savvy as they are, they’ve obviously huddled all their marketing gurus into a room and asked the question “How Can We Get More People To Want Our Products Instead Of The Premium Brands?”

And, so it seems, they’ve come up with some pretty good answers.

For one, they’ve tried to make their home brand products more appealing by improving the packaging and making them look more like their premium counterparts. They’ve added lots of colours and pictures to the products. The products have been given sexier names as opposed to the standard run-of-the-mill names. More attention has gone into product development and line extension thus improving the overall taste and appeal for the product as well as giving people more variety. But more importantly, they’ve moved their products to the all important centre eye level as opposed to hiding them at the bottom of the shelf.

And……..boy have they done a great job. There’s certainly nothing wrong with the supermarket home brand. In fact, some people swear by them and choose them over premium brands.

But, be sure that if you’re choosing the home brand for the cost saving, that you check the now standarised cost per unit price to make sure you are actually saving money. Because as their products continue to improve, their prices also increase. In some cases there is very little difference between premium brands and the home brand.
